Whatever your interest in history, Totnes Museum is a brilliant place to come spend of few hours feeding your curiosity.

Admission is FREE ……….. all donations big or small are greatly appreciated!  The Museum will be partially open for this special event, 10:30am to 4:00pm (Last entry at 3:30pm)

Totnes Museum is set in a beautifully restored Elizabethan merchant’s house built in the 16th century. The Grade I listed Elizabethan building is arguably the most important object in our collection and has many stories to tell.

First opened in 1961 to share the fascinating heritage of Totnes with the public. Today the museum is an independent charitable organisation, Totnes Museum Trust. Together with volunteers we work tirelessly to celebrate the stories, lives, objects and histories of Totnes to inspire the future.

Stoke Gabriel Wassail 2024

Stoke Gabriel is renowned for its apple orchards and cider. Every year this vibrant community comes together to take part in the ancient Wassail ceremony, which wakes the apple trees from their winter slumber with gun fire and singing, and offerings are made to the spirits of the trees to ensure a bountiful crop in that year’s apple harvest. Stoke Gabriel Wassail on Saturday 20th January 2024, combines this ancient ceremony with a glorious mid-winter folk festival of lantern making, Morris dancing, Mummers Players, storytelling, folk music, and local drink and food. The mid-winter folk festival will be held in the atmospheric surroundings of Church Walk in the heart of the village. The Wassail ceremony will take place in the community orchard. Friends of Stoke Gabriel School (FOSS), a charity, organises this event with a BBQ;  local suppliers will be providing refreshments and food,  including Hunts Cider. Stoke Gabriel Wassail begins with a magical lantern procession, led by children with their willow and paper lanterns, through the community orchard. The Wassail singers will accompany the crowd in the traditional tune, ‘Here we come a-wassailing’. Once at the oldest tree, our Wassail Queen and King will pour cider over the roots of the apple trees before being hoisted high into the tree to put bread soaked in cider in the branches to feed the robins, the spirits of the trees. Everyone gathers around the trees to sing traditional wassail songs. The dramatic finale is the firing of shotguns to wake the trees from their winter slumber and chase away any evil spirits. Entertainment is provided by Elfic the Jester, Beltane Border Morris Dancers, the Bovey Tracey Mummers Players, bands and the Wassail Singers. Story telling will take place in the Old School Rooms on Church Walk with Paul Sharman. Winter Solstice Bardic Storytelling Ceremony

Totnes Wheel of The Year Collective presents: Winter Solstice Bardic Storytelling Ceremony We'd love to welcome you to our Winter Solstice Bardic Storytelling Ceremony, featuring Madeleine Honor, Michelle Cadby, Adam Powell and other special guests! Come inside to the hearth fire and experience ancient storytelling, songs and ritual as our ancestors did at this time of year. This shortest night will be a moment for our inspiration and rebirth. You will be refreshed body, mind and soul to greet the return of the sun. Featuring skilled ceremonialists and bards from across the Devon tribe. This event is seated indoors in the cosy venue of 'The Hive', within the woodland glade of the Dartington Estate. Suitable for all ages Tickets are £8-£15 per person depending on your means. Support this volunteer run initiative in our debut event! Bring warm layers, a flask of tea and an offering for the fire… Madeleine Honor  Madeleine is a mother, singer, performer, sound & energy facilitator, kundalini yoga teacher, and creative practitioner. Madeleine has spent years as a performer and running drama and singing workshops with groups of women, children and refugees.  In her performances she often includes song, movement and mantra. Her deep connection to the natural world and shamanic practices are woven into a mesmerising landscape to create a sacred ceremonial experience. Adam Powell Adam is a multi instrumentalist storyteller with a passion for bringing the indigenous British Isles to life.
